GEO explained: how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini

Generative Engine Optimisation is how businesses earn mentions inside AI answers. Here is what it involves in practice.

Generative Engine Optimisation is the practice of structuring your online presence so AI assistants name your business when answering a buyer's question. Where SEO earns a position in a list of links, GEO earns a sentence inside the answer itself.

Why it matters now

A growing share of buyers ask an assistant before they open a search engine. If the assistant does not know you exist — or cannot verify basic facts about you — you are absent from that entire decision.

The four things that make a business citable

  • Entity clarity: identical name, address, phone and description everywhere online
  • Structured data: organisation, service, FAQ, review and person schema
  • Factual, extractable content: short direct answers before the detail
  • Third-party corroboration: directories, press and genuine reviews

Write for extraction

Open every section with a complete, self-contained answer of one to three sentences, then expand. Use comparison tables for options, publish honest pricing guidance, and avoid marketing language that cannot be verified.

Measuring GEO

Define twenty to thirty buyer questions, test them monthly across the major assistants, and record whether your business is named, cited or absent. That baseline is how you prove progress.
